Video Game Market Analysis Thread

Now that the Deathloop ads seem to have stopped, and as if the Champions’ League sponsorship wasn’t enough, PlayStation seem to have started up random ads for PS. No specific game or service, just “Play has no limits”, to keep hammering in that brand recognition, and it is in ad space that you would think a certain upcoming racing game which releases in a week (or 3 days) might have invested in…

Also I didn’t see ANY Age 4 or Forza related ad in my country and I’m expecting shit for Halo. Their marketing strategy outside NA seems coming from a little company in financial distress, not the richest and most powerful one in the world, lol. Concerning this issue I’m very disappointed by Phil, it’s 4 years he has full powers and Xbox marketing is still a joke.

Same here, not seen anything for neither AoE IV or Forza yet. Surely they must kick off the Forza Horizon 5 soon though?

Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed, lol. Last time I saw something here from an Xbox 1st party was Halo 5, so I’m still hoping.

Are these Ads during Live TV services for sports or are they from a sports platform internet streaming service?

I see these PS ads both on sports apps and regular tv, everywhere. I think Sony has marketing deals with domestic leagues (Serie A for sure, the SuperCup is even branded as PS5 SuperCup, lol) in addition to CL, so it doesn’t matter where you see the match, you’ll see these ads.

The new ones I’ve seen not related to CL is on gaming websites, youtube, physical stores etc.

Everything around CL is pretty much wherever a match is promoted, before, during, after. On the streams, on other linear TV channels which owns the streaming rights or are part of the same network, on dedicated sites. It’s everywhere.

You don’t believe Xbox is a household name? Anywhere other than the US?

Think you’re wrong there mate. In the U.K. it is remember the 360 was no 1 for a long time over PS3.

The problem Xbox has is because PS has been around longer that’s the defacto name you’d use when describing a gaming console.

Similar to how you’d refer to Netflix over Amazon prime as the streaming service . Doesn’t mean that prime isn’t a household name

AoE ads are all over YouTube. Can’t watch a video without seeing one.

All I have seen on YT is Back4Blood and FC6 before that. No AoE yet… But YT is not really what I’m referring to.

This is where Xbox needs to step up in my opinion. Tv ads seem to have dried up.

But to say Xbox isn’t a household name in countries is nonsense it’s not the no 1 name but it’s still a massive name.

360 was the go to in the U.K. for the 360 era I had a ps3 as well but with Xbox live it was no1

I think hardcore gamers over estimate exclusives etc, the majority of casuals just go with what the hype is around. The 360 had the hype the ps3 didn’t until way later.

Basically the Xbox one did exactly what The PS3 did and got totally confused about what it was. A gaming console.

Some are loyal and just stick to what they know.

Xbox have made a start with some kind of sponsorship with the England football team but which will be good for the brand but they need to do more. If they could sponsor the premier league in a similar way that PS sponsors the champions league it would be massive

I am not sure how appealing to Xbox 360 helps the argument. In my home country after PS2 domination almost everybody owned Xbox 360. But in Xbox One era people switched to PS4 and unlike PS2 era, people went with PS5 the next gen (guess digital libraries helped, though even those who never owned consoles went with Playstation). Now I literally don’t know a single person who owns Xbox Series, while those who own console have either Switch or Playstation.

I believe Xbox 360 had partnerships with football leagues and - what more - it launched earlier and was cheaper.

Where do you live? Here in Italy it’s a bit better than X1 gen, thanks to GP value, even if MS does not advertize literally anything here, I think there is not even a concept of marketing budget, lol.

Currently - Netherlands, but home country is Belarus. In Belarus we don’t even have normal marketing for any console, people just go with Playstation (and of course Switch).

Funnily enough I went to my friend (got acquainted some time ago) who lived in the neighborhood - for the first time here - and guess what console he owns? Playstation.

Yeah, well, Xbox doesn’t even bother in western EU, go figures in eastern EU.

Microsoft should replace that 1 billion that EA isn’t giving FIFA to obtain marketing for all teams and they should rotate giant Xbox ads for the latest game on them every week with a giant Gamepass tag on them.

And that makes it more hilarious considering Xbox 360 era and PS2 domination where literally nobody knew what Xbox is (OG was nonexistent), but the suddenly everybody owned Xbox 360.

I guess piracy helped a lot. Just like during NES era and PS2 and Xbox 360, people just hacked it to no end. There are still torrent trackers with various Xbox games you can burn on the disk and run on hacked console.

FIFA owns basically nothing aside FIFA label. No teams etc.

Colin Moriarty admitted recently that the subscription service will win out over the retail model.

MS best play here is to simply render the retail model obsolete like Netflix did with blockbuster.

That’s not true. Plenty of people knew what the OG Xbox was but the PS2 was the dominant console. The OG Xbox just came out too late.

He also said that 3rd party publishers/studios should conspire with Sony to kill gamepass in its infancy :phil_lmao:
