I was looking forward to the Xbox Ally for the improved windows gaming experience, but it’s making a much bigger splash than I expected. Increased XPA support and improved game optimization on PC out the gate + some games coming to Xbox (PC AND Console) for the first time ever because of either this device or the reception surrounding it. It’s not at all a bad strategy. A good investment for Xbox to grow on PC that allows them to offload some cost onto ASUS and continue to focus on next Gen. This is also Microsoft’s biggest first party platform push for Windows gaming ever too. And like Pro models (the One X) don’t really grow the audience or increase developer support; they’re a nice way to double dip for cutting edge hardware in the closed off proprietary console market. But the Xbox Series X seriously holds up. They already have their budget and pro model and both are fantastic (at launch prices and during better economic eras they’d have lowered in retail price making them even more attractive).

If the plan is major new first party hardware every 6 - 7 years and new Xbox OEMs every other year I’m on board. Plus OEMs typically do refreshes every year, so we could see a new Xbox PC of some kind every year. And we haven’t even seen what the AMD partnership will do for partner Xbox PC OEMs. It’s limited cost from Microsoft and forces them to do more on the software end (kinda crazy how bad the Xbox App experience was on windows just five years ago).

That’s actually a very nice commercial!

For anyone who owns ROG Ally, there’s a new update for Armory Crate and the command center is now streamline, similar to Steam Deck. It’s quite nice. Definitely has Xbox influence. I can definitely see them updating a lot more frequently with Xbox help, especially for Xbox Ally.

You know it’s odd about the reaction to the marketing prior to this release. Where was everyone with Samsung/LGTV calling it?

If you think about the pricing, this is like Fantastic Four.

If you know, you know.

As long as baby Ally doesn’t explode and Reed has to pop out the coma gun

You know it’s kinda crazy to me that because Microsoft is Microsoft they don’t get a ā€œhandhelds have finally arrivedā€ wave of memes. Because that’s the influence the Xbox Ally is having. Steam Deck may have kicked things off, but this is the first time we’re really seeing a big wave of mainstream support for handheld compatibility (with a massive bit because it’s windows and a lot of mainstream games aren’t even on the steam deck).

I’m watching the Xbox 2 + 1 Jez Corden interview with new blood interactive and literally three minutes in they confirm that they’re finally bringing their games to Xbox BECAUSE of the Xbox Ally and Xbox’ Play Anywhere (Xbox being an ecosystem on both PC and Console). https://youtu.be/rS0rdQRGqgU?si=nmPbquFB1t2MA5ii

Honestly this is a truly incredible piece of hardware.

Coming from the OG Ally this is a MASSIVE improvement. The ergonomics is something that can’t be understated.

Played Keeper last night for a few hours and didn’t want to put the thing down.

Pressing and holding the Xbox button opens up your opened apps menu so I’ve been using that to seamlessly switch between stores (Xbox, Steam, Epic etc…). If the next Xbox builds on this we’re going to be in for a real treat.

I’ve really enjoyed hearing everyone’s thoughts on this handheld. I do want one, but I think I’m going to wait a bit for the software to mature a little more. I did get a switch 2. I don’t know how that happened. I convinced myself I was ready to retire from Nintendo, but some friends talked me into it. Maybe after I play metroid and whatever the new zelda is, I can trade it in and the ally x will be in an even better place than it is now. But I’m excited to follow the xbox handheld news along the way.

It’s expensive so that alone will put alot of people away. But make no mistake, it’s not in a bad place. Sure software will mature and get better over time. But the way some people talk it sounds like this is unplayable or something. It’s not. It’s pretty darn good actually. This thing got really good reviews for a reason.

I read that too, and it’s one of those things that, yet again, smacks of people not thinking about what they are saying. This shit is so obvious!

I really must get over it. But it’s so silly!

So on XB2 yesterday Jez says he’s heard that Xbox Backwards compatibility is coming to this device in some fashion thanks to emulation. I’m guessing we’re talking OG Xbox and 360 maybe here, doubt Xbox One would be possible although you never know I guess.

Also wondering how they would handle that running on other devices? Guessing if it comes it’ll be to both Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X so that means it should support pretty much all Windows devices. Would definitely make people like me possibly jump in earlier.

If they could get this working, that will definitely shut up a lot of the discourse around the Xbox Ally S/X.
