Phil Spencer Talks Xbox Showcase, Studio Closures, Xbox Handheld, and More! | IGN Live 2024

Yeah, we’ve seen the power of IP in major ways recently. Harry Potter and Spiderman carry infinitely more weight than anything in gaming bar Mario.

This. It feels like what we saw happen with PS3, where the second half of the gen created a wave of momentum going into PS4 simply due to the games.

Although, I don’t quite trust the Xbox team to avoid shooting themselves in the foot. Whether it’s messaging or getting wrapped around the axle on some technology push that’s too early or simply not wanted, there is a lot of opportunity to erase the goodwill in the blink of an eye.

Amazing show and interview. Xbox is just blowing me away.

PS4 didn’t need momentum from games, the launch wasn’t really that great. It was just Xbox messing up so bad, and Nintendo not getting any major new AAA games from third parties.

They are handling the marketing for CoD well, it was wise of them to start the show with that game and then saying it’s on Game Pass day one.

This game absolutely has big potential to either increase GP subs significantly, or increase hardware sales or both. It remains to be seen how big of a increase it will do, but I kinda wish MS had waited to see what difference a gigantic IP like that would do before going in this new direction.

I really hope it works out for them because having such huge IP in your service is just quite something. If they use all the money they receive from Switch and PS copies sold for new games to bring to Game Pass, on top of that they keep bringing great, powerful hardware for us and it remains sustainable for them…i see no reason not to stick with Xbox.

I just hope we’re not gonna see more devs prioritising other platforms first (ala Wukong) and let Xbox players wait.

I think they will maintain exclusives. It would be highly detrimental in the long run, especially with new hardware on the horizon. Afterwards, yelp i do not know and that’s something that will require communication and addressing the issue head on.

As for what i expect to happen in regard to that is a bit more specific. I think, opinion of mine(remember that), that they will absolutely keep Fable exclusive alongside Gears, Halo, Forza and Perfect Dark. The reason i added Perfect Dark to the list is because its being considered a AAAA game, so of course they would want to make it the most desirable thing for hardware fans for next gen.

Also, am having an inkling feeling, i know people may not like what am about to say, that the stuff they are doing now could be a sign that they could acquire plenty more studios/publishers just to fuel gamepass and i think i am betting top dollar on Sandfall Interactive, Rebellion, A44 , Sad Cat Studio, and Dinosaur Bethoven being likely targets. Given the interactions online and what they have said.

But for publishers, yelp 11bit Studios and Paradox are the ones that come to mind more and more.

Those are things i wanted in this matter. I apologies if any of this sounded rude.

There was a lot of fanfare over the direction of the games/content in the second half of the PS3 gen that naturally led people to have expectations around what to expect going forward into the PS4 gen.

Microsoft as a games publisher has been a mixed bag in terms of output, so it naturally leads people to be doubtful or cautious. If Microsoft can follow up on Sunday’s showcase in the right way then I think that fanfare carries over to the next gen and translates into more gamers wanting to play Xbox games.

I wish they’d add the “play day one on game pass” ad on the Call of Duty’s YouTube channel videos as well

That’s exactly what I thought the plan would be Xbox is an oil tanker and it wouldn’t turn around over night and they’d build their momentum on go for the big push for the new gen.

The multi platform initiative does put a bit of spanner in the works of this though

Anyone who really, really gives a shit about exclusives can only really play on Switch. So.

No one really cares about playing exclusives, sure people care about list wars, feeling validated in their purchase or if lack of exclusives will harm the platform they prefer but there is not one person (that genuinely enjoys gaming) that gets more enjoyment out of playing a game because it’s an exclusive.

The fact that Ass. Creed. is multiplat didn’t reduce how much I’m looking forward to it after seeing it in the showcase any more than if they had announced Doom as as exclusive it would have raised my interest above 1/10.
