Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

I enjoyed this episode, they go hard on Phil too, deservedly so and I do agree with them, Xbox’s messaging is all over the place and Ryan mentioned that an Xbox employee who he wouldn’t name told him they weren’t happy about Phil’s comments regarding competition with PlayStation, it was such a loser mentality to even say what he said.

Right now they are in this odd place where they want to pretend they’re not really competing with Sony while also having to claim that cloud isn’t a certainty yet due to the regulatory issues with ABK in the UK, honestly, it does make the most sense to go hard on consoles, it doesn’t mean they would sacrifice cloud and PC and everything else, they’re Microsoft and can do it all but Phil’s words do honestly make me believe they just want to go 3rd party :man_shrugging:t3:

Grown men sounding like this and not being able to understand nuance is hilarious.

Nah. It’s okay to criticize Phil when it’s due. And this is definitely one of those times.

I disagree. I understand what he was trying to say, but as the head of Xbox, you simply cannot go on a podcast and admit defeat in the console space. Especially not until they have large adoption of their services model.

Not selling more than Nintendo/Sony =/= admitting defeat

It’s crazy to me that some people are pissed off at Phil for telling the truth and not BSing us all…and not only that but they also twist what he said to fit their doom & gloom BS narrative. The “core” gaming community/media sure is a weird bunch. :confused_wat:

Sorry, I don’t think you do.

I think maybe the words were not the best. He was clearly on a low moment and he could have expressed himself differently because the idea behind is coherent and aligns with the brand’s objectives but I see how some may have interpreted he was throwing the towel kinda.

Phil was incredibly honest and I heard a bunch of adults go on podcasts and say he shouldn’t have said anything because it would worry the “core audience” who wants to feel like first class citizens.

Sounding like what? The video was fair and they were just going over Phil’s words, there was nothing ridiculous about what they said.

Other than completely misrepresenting his words, yes, very fair, not ridiculous at all

It’s one part people looking for clicks, one part people still fighting a console war with plastic boxes that’s slowly but surely dying and will be eventually taken over by the ecosystem/subscription war

They say they understand what he was saying and that what he said was true…but they ramble for 40 minutes about why he shouldn’t say it anyway. Just all-around silly shit from unlocked in these past 2 episodes.

If the only reason you’ve been hyping up “real” AAA games like Avowed, Hellblade 2, Perfect Dark, and Fable is so you can list war with Sony fans you’re looking at this the wrong way. Enjoy the games because they’re good.

100% Ryan made up that employee to take some of the heat off him. The word loser mentality needs to be thrown in the bin because folks forgot what it means. I have so much respect for Phil. That man is a real leader, he took responsibility and didn’t throw anyone under the bus.

It’s so dumb! Folks tripping over themselves to offer bad takes.

Sony has 96% marketshare in Japan, 80% in Europe and the guys want to hear fearytales about Xbox selling more boxes than PS.

That’s all gaming is for a lot of folks these days

They care more about list wars, GOTY awards and console sales than actually playing good games

They’re more upset at Phil “conceding the console war” then they are at Redfall being painfully mid.

These guys don’t care about games, they just want to have list wars.

Its baffling how someone (Phil) can spell it out so clearly, for years, and people still don’t understand it.

The console isn’t the be all end all anymore. Fighting over small slices of a increasingly inconsequential pie shouldn’t, and justifiably isn’t, their focus.

The inability of these “journalists” to grasp basic context and nuance is either stupidity or purposeful malice at this point. Gotta get those clicks.

Xbox: We are being forward thinking and making a play to be the biggest player in the future to come.

IGN/YouTubers: MS HAS GIVEN UP, XBOX DOSENT LOVE CONSOLES AND DOESN’T WANT TO MAKE GOOD GAMES.
