I did wonder if this might be the case, you’d definitely not expect it from a modern device .
What is considered good and bad? 5Ghz WiFi tends to be flakey to begin with. I just ran the test and while it doesnt perform quite as well as my laptop or iPhone, I still got 400Mb over wifi (with the built-in connection test). Iphone gets about 600Mb down (1Gb internet).
What’s annoying me more at the moment are the poorly constructed reviews from most of the media.
I’m not sure if Nintendo are simply paying them off but saying generic things like “They’ve improved everything” when the original was already out of date when it launched 8 years ago is just a no brainer.
This said is ‘everything’ better?
- Handheld battery performance has been halved to 2 hours and being a Lithium Ion battery it will also reduce further over time (many are reporting that it’s already under 2 hours) .
- It sounds like they are using a ‘good’ LCD screen but I would still prefer it had OLED.
- Despite all the issues they have had with stick drift they are still using exactly the same technology which nobody seems to be mentioning (yet).
- Lastly taking into account the issues above the strip down videos suggest they’ve done a ‘Apple’ and made it a nightmare to repair/replace anything.
Even the Switch 2 tech is lagging behind the rest of the market.
It reminds me of every year when Apple says “Its the best iPhone we’ve ever built”. Well, yeah…I would certainly hope so.

Someone really wants to migrate to digital.
Woof! 25 seconds is really rough. Still looking forward to getting a Switch 2 though I will probably look for one in Japan when I visit in september. Mostly since the more expensive international version there is still a lot cheaper than getting it in the Netherlands due to pricing, weak yen and it being tax free for foreign nationals.
It’s crazy how well so many of my Switch games are performing out of the box in handheld mode. From my short testing sessions :
- Nier Automata is not supposed to be compatible (it’s crashing after a while from some reports) but plays perfectly and looks crazy in handheld mode.
- DOOM 2016 is pretty nice. Still blurry without a patch, but perfectly fine.
- Overwatch 2 is transformed: 100% playable with any character, in any mode. You can see your chracter’s details in Stadium and I can actually aim properly now with the help of the Switch 2 sticks and gyro.
- Witcher 3 is decent in handheld (you can put everything on max in the settings). A bit more sharp with perfect performance, although I didn’t get to Novigrad, but for those who have tested it there, it’s stable 30 FPS.
- The Batman trilogy is really great now, especially Asylum and Arkham City. Arkham Knights is still a blurry pixelated mess but with stable framerate now.
- Every 2D game like Street of Rage 4, Balatro, Hades, is great in 1080p on handheld. I can’t see the upscale most of the time.
Performance updates for these games would be great, but I’m satisfied with what I get from these Switch 1 titles due to most games using dynamic resolution scaler and having unstable framerate before.
I don’t have a whole lot to test outside of Nintendo games (pretty much all I buy on switch). I have a few indie games and smaller titles. But I don’t buy much in the way of third party stuff on switch.
Yeah, I buy most of the indies and third party titles on sale because I already have them on Xbox. Switch 1 & 2 for me are mostly for playing on handheld. Buuuut…Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart World and Zelda games are so nice to play on a big screen with 60 FPS. I waited soooooo long to play these games with good performance on a big screen… It’s time to finish both Zelda games and even Odyssey maybe !
Im neck deep in a new save of Breath of the Wild. Just an incredible game.
My understanding is that you need to order the International edition via Nintendo, you can’t buy it at brick and mortar stores. Hopefully that restriction will be relaxed when you come over.
Mario Kart is fun so far and Fortnite finally being playable with decent graphics and frame rate is going to be awesome for me on the road!
Can’t wait for Metroid Prime 4 now!
Didn’t they drop a patch for one of the or all Xenoblade games? Make that crisp and 60fps,ya know?
