Halo |OT2| Forging Ahead

It would be good if they gave us a preview for things to come in seasons 5 and 6.

Way too far out for that. Theyā€™ve said/hinted repeatedly they donā€™t want to show stuff they canā€™t guarantee.

They gave a preview of season 3 in September '22, 6 months ahead.

Thatā€™s true, fair enough; but it was more indicative than detailed - and perhaps given the things that have happened at 343 since, itā€™s made them more cautious. The message from Sean Baron and co has been very ā€˜cautious yet optimisticā€™ the past 6 months.

I simply think it would be cool if they indicated what theyā€™re working on. Infiniteā€™s reputation is in shambles, people mock it for console wars or comedic purposes. So I think it would be better if they opened themselves up to the community that stays loyal because whatā€™s the harm at this point?

Iā€™ll get the battle pass as I want to support the studio in some way, but beyond that Iā€™ll never look at the store because the uncertainty means all my purchases might become meaningless just a few months from now.

I got it every single time I loaded up the game

I enjoyed the scenes they made but lets be real, the amount of resources and time it takes to make those scenes is undoubtedly huge and I seriously doubt the MP community gives a rats ass about whatā€™s going on there

Itā€™s a shame for those that care about Halo lore and whatnot but considering where the game is at right now, their focus should be entirely on pumping out actual content and giving players as many reasons to stay engaged with the MP content as possible, CG cutscenes that people will look at once at best and never look at again ainā€™t it

Agree, the scenes were cool but itā€™s a lot of work for something that is suppose to only be shown once.

Rather that work go into fixes and maps.

For Halo lore, the books are where itā€™s at. Iā€™m excited for the following:

The return of the Didact!

Her 343GS storyline was goofy but actually very interesting, hoefully Didact will see a similar redemption arc in her novel(s), without being put back into the games.

Sadly it will probably not been translated in French (all Halo books since 2001 were translated until Microsoft stopped localization efforts after 2015).

I prefer them in English anyway.

Itā€™s good that the universe is still alive via the books at least. How an IP like that can be so massacred and mishandled on the game front is quite astonishing.

Iā€™ll scribble some nonsense while waiting for the Season 4 update to download.

If a story in a fictional universum has a definite conclusion, then writing/creating sequels to that story only cheapens it. The events of the Star Wars sequel/prequel trilogies were literally a result of a thousand year behind the scenes machinations by the Sith, with Anakin being the chosen one yadda yadda. You try to do the sequel with an even more chosen one Jedi, even more bombastic battles taking place a decade or two later, itā€™s just not feasible. The sequel trilogy was always doomed to fail even if it was actually good on its own terms. By contrast, Biowareā€™s KOTOR did the Star Wars universe right, moving the story thousands of years back did not cheapen the movies.

Imagine if Lord of the Rings got a sequel where Frodo or his son fights off an even bigger baddie than Sauron. It just would a bad taste in everyoneā€™s mouth.

In the Halo universe, in the first half of the 26th century you have a galactic war with humanity being on the backfoot and losing the war, when the events of the Halo trilogy depict a galactic crisis that leads to . Humanity being the leading galactic force 5 years after Halo 3 makes no sense, you simply donā€™t recover from a war that quickly. And even though the events of the Halo trilogy were 100k years in the making, you suddenly have threats just as big as the Flood, wars just as big if not bigger than the human-Covenant war. You have a stupendous amount of retcons (Forerunners being a different species, existence of the Banished etc.). They should have moved the story at least 50 years forward, if not more. Most characters were killed off in Halo 3 anyway and Chief was in hibernation. I just hate the direction Frank Oā€™Connor and 343i took the story in, even if I still follow the story and enjoy most of the novels (but thatā€™s maybe because most of the novels donā€™t try to be bombastic and focus on small scale skirmishes).

With this hefty size, no wonder they had to cut corners.

It was 10GB on Steam

Thereā€™s so much they could do with the Halo Universe. Just like Star Wars, as you mention, the most interesting stuff is found outside the main storyline.

Just give me Halo Mass Effect damnit.

And theyā€™ll do that as much as they think is safe. I agree, itā€™d be nice to have a ā€˜roadmapā€™, etc, but we are where we are, post-343 job losses etc. The gameā€™s reputation is beyond anyone at this point, for quite absurd reasons, frankly.

Doubting whether the game will be around in 6 months or not is, conceivably, a legit thing to do, but I think it highly unlikely itā€™ll go anywhere. Season 5 has already been mentioned, for one thing.

Indeed.

Street Fighter 5 & Street Fighter 6 used captioned artwork to progress their arcade story modes. And while it didnā€™t compare to games like Mortal Kombat, not even close, it still worked in guiding an interesting narrative.

I think something like that would work perfectly for this live service game. Plus, for people who want to just jump in without a lot of preamble, we can read through it real quick. No need to sit for 2-5 minutes.

When you do something like this you could even have quick narratives multiple times per season, before every season event, and before the introduction of new weapons, armour sets, and equipment.

These sorts of low cost but creative and high impact solutions or something you see from indie teams. In contrast to juggernauts like Fortnite & Apex Legends, Infinite is much like an indie game in terms of paltry revenues not justifying massive budgets.

I think it would be mistake for 343 to completely abandon all narrative. Their concept artists have done a lot of great work and all it need is some solid narrative attached to it.

First season 4 impressions:

  • Infection is fun, tho I cannot understand how it took 18 months to introduce given itā€™s been a Halo staple forever at this point. There are supposedly 9 maps for infection in matchmaking, but I had the same 3 in 7 matches. The Forest is a beautiful map
  • I played 2 BTB matches but not on the new map shame
  • shame that the community playlist is limited to doubles at the moment. Too sweaty for me and Iā€™m not good enough frankly, Iā€™d be dragging my partner down
  • custom game browser is still a bit buggy, I failed to join the game on 2 of 5 attempts
  • I had desync in 1 match, but it weirdly worked in my favor. Managed to mow 6 infected in a row as they couldnā€™t hit me lol

Overall, the game is in a decent shape. Itā€™s simply a shame 343i did not hit seasonability right off the bat. Just imagine how much healthier the population would have been if this update hit in September '22.

I hate to admit it now, because back in 2020/2021 I wanted the game out so badly. But honestly they should have delayed the game till now.

I would say now that infection and career progression are there itā€™s finally at a state that most other halo games launched at. The reception would have been great.

Also imagine if they had 1.5 more years on the campaign. It was great at launch but it probably would have been a masterpiece.
