Game Pass (remains) Profitable for Xbox

They’d be finding a way to blame the failure on gamers, a la Concord and “grave dancing” (I’ll never stop being amused by that).

Concern about Game Pass sustainability has to be one of the most unironically hilarious debates in gaming.

MS is a 3 trillion dollar corporation. Here’s how the real world works: if MS can afford Game Pass, it’s sustainable. End of. When people attempt to extract Game Pass from MS and argue from a standpoint which entails speculating a “what if” scenario in which Game Pass is some sort of independent self-sustaining model, it’s just funky as hell.

When Sony released the PS3 with a blu ray player attached at a serious loss, did anyone start screaming and crying about unsustainable? No, of course not. If Sony could afford to gamble and take a hit, then there was no problem whatsoever. That’s business. Same with Game Pass.

I like Game Pass and I’m glad it exists :moai:

Why is this discussion still happening?

No business (especially Microsoft) are going to run a service at a loss unless it’s A, for a charity (tax write-off) or B, for loss leading.

Gamers are not a charity and 8 years is far too long for loss leading.

It’s mostly other era and similar beacons of Sony fanboyism poisoning the proverbial well.

Leftists on Bluesky (the majority of it’s userbase) absolutely hate Microsoft (and Xbox by extension) for providing Cloud support for Israel and will take any chance they can to dunk on them, even if they’re spreading misinformation in the process. We’ve reached this weird intersection in the cultural zeitgeist where it’s acceptable to openly attack Xbox consumers, even on non-console war lines. It’s a shame because I’m left-leaning myself and went there to get away from all of the toxicity on X.

Gamers are weird how they’re using console wars to hope a service fails. Why would the consumers wants gamepass to fail in this economy ?

This hobby is becoming expensive and there would be so many games I would miss out on due to games now cost $110cdn + . Game pass allows me to play more games and take chances on buying other games not on service due to having some money left over due to savings with game pass.

This economy is tough and many have other things to worry about beside gaming. Why do people want to ruin affordable entertainment for others ?

People love to gatekeep. Gives them a sense of superiority or uniqueness.

I think the move away from exclusivity is great and hope it continues. If (big if) it makes xbox developed hardware unviable that will be a loss but if they can make my existing library accessible on other platforms then ill move on (and keep playing games)

Not just gamers, but journalists who don’t pay for most of their games. It’s why I’ve been calling out the classism in the games media equally for years; easy to tell people something sucks when you’re never in a position to need something like Game Pass to even allow you to play games…

yeeeep! so many headlines are a variation on, “guy who doesn’t pay for games says not paying for games will kill industry”

Alexx of OhNoIt’sAlexx has a great view of this (paraphrased): Game Pass is good for the consumer, because it makes games affordable to play. That’s it. You don’t need to care what Microsoft does corporately, because it doesn’t affect the consumer. It’s not your worry whether developers are paid or not.

And that I think is the only argument (and comeback) you need for Game Pass- it makes games affordable to play.

I think this single post sums up everything quite nicely:

If real life was an “end of the world” movie then fortnite/roblox/tiktok/youtube/netflix sucking the entertainment hours represents the aliens while gamepass is the dumb little thing causing the humans to fight amongst themselves while the aliens blow up the world
