Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Hands-On Preview

Super optimistic after watching a bunch of previews today. It looks like BioWare might have a big hit on its hands, for the first time in a long while.

Did you find the locations interesting to explore and walk around in? Also, did you see some bigger open areas similar to DAI or nothing that extreme? I didnā€™t always find it a plus in DAI.

Looks much better then the first few showings of this game, wonder if it can avoid the initial first impression negative narrative that sinks so many games these days?

I do hope you can turn off all the hit point numbers and life bars, that stuff just looks stupid when in heavy fighting and kills the immersion.

Yes and not quite that big in my time

I hope BioWare and EA take some learnings from this. People are so much more positive on the game from just seeing uninterrupted gameplay footage and hearing people share their thoughts on it, than that first trailer. (Even though I didnā€™t hate that trailer personally.) It seems like it maybe shouldnā€™t take decades in the business to learn this kind of lesson that any average gamer off the street probably could have told them, but here we are.

The industry could definitely benefit from having more people who are into video games yeah.

Tangent, but I work in a corporate environment and itā€™s interesting to see how ideas cycle in and out over time. ā€œOne size fits allā€ was big for a while - if your job is marketing, you should be able to apply the same skills and techniques whether the product is a video game or a car or a brand of coffee or whatever else. I could be wrong but I think the corporate culture at Amazon was really pushing that for a while. Now, at least in my business, itā€™s turning back around again to subject matter expertise and specialization over versatility. In another couple years the wheel will turn again and some different idea will be trendy.

Anyway, Iā€™m sure the folks at BioWare and EA genuinely do like and care about games, but when you release a trailer and 9 out of 10 people at a place like ResetEra donā€™t connect to it, itā€™s time to re-evaluate. You need to have some kind of clue who your customers are and what they want. Iā€™ll stop here because if I keep going, Concord is about to start catching strays.

Iā€™m still very skeptical but am hopeful, at the same time. Mainly because Iā€™m tired of studio closures and failed projects; Bioware really need a win and if this vastly-compromised title gets us a win, maybe the next ME will be a return-to-form.

I do find it funny seeing some supposed ā€˜OG fansā€™ complaining about the lack of open-worldness (not you at all, commenting on the zeitgeist) when thatā€™s literally how the first two games wereā€¦ the only ā€œopen worldā€ DA was Inquisition and, partly due to that structure, it was filled with some of the most offensive fetch/collectathon quests outside of an MMO ffs. So, while I have reservations, the structure definitely isnā€™t one of them.

I like open world games but BioWare has traditionally excelled at smaller, more directed areas, so this is perfect.

They clearly didnā€™t know what to do with the giant maps in Inquisition and Andromeda.

Haha, itā€™s very easy to spot the fake fans.

The crazy part is that for some of these 20-something previewers, Origins and DA2 are retro games that they may have been too young to play.

The anti-woke/dei squad are attacking any and everyone that positively previewed this one, been a ā€œfunā€ day.

Seems like pretty much all the previews were very positive, from what Iā€™ve seen. Hopefully some crow served up next month for people who want to attack this game.

I understand people who have issues with what theyā€™ve announced (3 party members, uncontrolled party members, world state stuff) but those are minor blemishes to me as long as they nail the story, characters, and core gameplay. And yeah, ā€œOGā€ fans for this series can be so obnoxious and extremely toxic with their history of targeting devs.

Iā€™m one of the few thatā€™s all in with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Hell, my biggest complaint is EA changing the name from Dreadwolf simply because that sounds a lot better at least to me. But either way, day one digitally for me!!! :joy:

See some people being annoying devs on Twitter about this game. ā€œWRPGSā€ have got to have some of the most toxic fanbases.

Definitely not a bad thing!

Oh and environmental storytelling? Iā€™m not sure if this was ever really a DA thing, but did you find notes/journals that told something about a happening there which sparked a side quest? Itā€™s something TES and Fallout are especially known for, but is that here too?

lots of things around, yes. encourages searching around
