Since we seem to be on the verge of some news from the backwards compatible team, I think this is the perfect time to create a topic like this – after all, we all have a wishlist to share, don’t we?
Introduction
During its E3 2015 event Microsoft announced a feature that had consistently been at the top of everyone’s request lists: select Xbox 360 titles would be playable natively on Xbox One consoles. The feature was made available on November 12, when the first 104 titles joined the program.
Two years later, during its E3 2017 event, Microsoft announced that they would expand the program even further and make select original Xbox games backwards compatible, with the first batch of games being made available a few months later.
For four years Microsoft added over 500 new games to the program. Then, during E3 2019, Microsoft announced that it would no longer add new Xbox and Xbox 360 games to the program and would instead work on making most of the thousands of Xbox One games backwards compatible for the new generation of consoles.
On May 2020 Microsoft confirmed that thousands of Xbox One games were already playable natively on the new and yet-to-be-released Series X, taking advantage of the full power of the new console’s CPU, GPU and SSD. And more: Microsoft also announced that backwards compatible games would be able to take advantage of Auto HDR and Quick Resume at launch and, in the near future, render with increased resolutions and double the frame rate.
Finally, on July 2020, Microsoft confirmed that every non-Kinect Xbox One game would be playable on the Series X|S at launch.
